Mandy Espezel: slipping into and against
We cordially invite you to the opening of the exhibition of our canadian resident Mandy Espezel: SLIPPING INTO AND AGAINST
opening: 24/05/2018 from 7 p.m. | exhibition: 25/05 – 01/06/2018
During my residency with Studio PRÁM I explored the function of intuitive process, within material embodiment, through a series of works on paper. The resulting and in-progress works exist as sketchbook and journal entries, individual drawings, paintings, and large-scale performance and installation objects. The exhibition “slipping into & against” brings these works together in a site-specific installation that engages with the unique and dynamic qualities of the Studio PRÁM gallery space. My process for this ongoing series is informed by an interest in touch as a tool of communication and bodily knowledge. As well, the text “Uses of the Erotic: The Erotic As Power” by Audre Lorde specifically informs my contextualization of subjective identity and intimacy as it relates to the making of images and objects. This series engages the act of art making as an intentionally vulnerable act, discovered through intimate and joyful material embodiments.
Mandy Espezel is a Canadian artist originally from Fort McMurray, Alberta. They received a BFA in Art and Design from the University of Alberta in 2007, and a MFA in Art from the University of Lethbridge in 2012. Based in an intuitive, material studio practice, their work engages a feminist-phenomenological discourse and the power and necessity of vulnerability. Espezel has participated in a number of residencies, most recently with the Klondike Institute of Art and Culture (KIAC) located in Dawson City, Yukon, and with the Banff Centre for the Arts and Creativity in the thematic residency “Body as Site”, lead by Lucy and Jorge Orta. Recent projects include solo exhibitions with Casa Public Art Gallery (Pine Cones in Soft Mouths), and with Harcourt House Gallery (HEY NOW(s), WELLNESS CHECK(s), and other improbable obsessions). Espezel is based in Lethbridge, where they are a recurrent sessional instructor in the Art Department at the University of Lethbridge.
